Our Fathers

Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best;
but God disciplines us for our good,
that we may share in his holiness—Hebrews 12:10

Because the LORD disciplines those he loves,
as a father the son he delights in.. –Proverbs 3:12

 “Blessed is the man whom God corrects;
       so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.

For he wounds, but he also binds up;
       he injures, but his hands also heal.—Job
5:17-18

Uniqueness of Christianity

cross1.jpg

Christianity with its doctrines of humility, of forgiveness, of love, is incompatible with the State, with its haughtiness, its violence, its punishment, its wars.-Leo Tolstoy

Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I myself have founded empires, but upon what do these creations of our genius depend?  Upon force.  Jesus alone founded his empire upon love, and to this very day millions would die for him.-Napoleon Bonaparte

The cross of Christ is the still-point in a turning world.  Everything before leads up to it, everything that follows flows from it.  It is the climax of the story the center-piece of the whole drama-T.S. Elliot

The essential fact of Christianity is that God thought all men worth the sacrifice of his son.-William Barclay

Children Are A Gift

christmas-at-sweeneys-067xemail.jpg

Sons are a heritage from the LORD,
children a Gift from him.—Psalms 127:3

We will tell the next generation
the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD,
his power, and the wonders he has done.—Psalm 78:4

It is easy to love those who are far away. It isn’t always easy to love those who are right next to us. It is easier to offer food to the hungry than to answer the lonely suffering of someone who lacks love right in one’s own family.  The world today is upside down because there is so very little love in the home, and in family life. We have no time for each other. Everybody is in such a terrible rush, and so anxious…and in the home begins the disruption of the peace of the world.-Mother Theresa

Jesus Spent Much Time Healing The Sick

dscn0055.jpg

He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars
and calls them each by name.
Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
His understanding has no limit.
The Lord sustains the humble
but casts the wicked to the ground.Psalms 147: 3-6

Our Lord Jesus spent much time in healing sick people, and in the natural course of events it happened that the last thing He did with His kind hands was to heal a bad cut.  (I wonder how they could have the heart to bind His hands after that.)  In this, as in everything, He left us an example that we should follow in His steps. -Amy Carmichael

By His Wounds We Are Healed

easter-sunday-139x.jpg

But He was pierced for our transgressions.He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishmentthat brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed.—Isaiah 53:5

What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered
Was all for sinners’ gain;
Mine, mine was the transgression,
But Yours the deadly pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Savior,
It is I who deserve Your place;
Look on me with Your favor,
Promise to me Your grace.
-from O Sacred Head, Now Wounded, written by Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153)

God Becomes Human Out of Love For Humanity

ethan-fireman-baby-announcement-051xx.jpg

“God overrules every reproach of untruth, doubt, and uncertainty raised against God’s love by entering as a human being into human life, by taking on and bearing bodily the nature, essence, guilt, and suffering of human beings.  God becomes human out of love for humanity.”  Dietrich Bonhoeffer

God’s care for humanity was so great that he sent his unique Son among us, so that those who count on him might not lead a futile and failing existence, but have the undying life of God Himself. –John 3:16

Simple Ministry Of Presence

house-014xx.jpg

More and more, the desire grows in me simply to walk around, greet people, enter their homes, sit on their doorsteps, play ball, throw water, and be known as someone who wants to live with them.  It is a privilege to have the time to practice this simple ministry of presence.  Still, it is not as simple as it seems.  My own desire to be useful, to do something significant, or to be part of some impressive project is so strong that soon my time is taken up by meetings, conferences, study groups, and workshops that prevent me from walking the streets.  It is difficult not to have plans, not to organize people around an urgent cause, and not to feel that you are working directly for social progress.  But I wonder more and more if the first thing shouldn’t be to know people by name, to eat and drink with them, to listen to their stories and tell your own and to let them know with words, handshakes, and hugs that you do not simply like them, but you truly love them.”  -Henri Nouwen

I Hold Your Right Hand

park-day-016x.jpg

For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Do not fear, I will help you.”…So that all may see and know, all may consider and understand, that the hand of the Lord has done this  Isaiah 41:13,20

Father, I abandon myself into Your hands. Do with me what you will.
Whatever You do, I will thank You. I am ready for all.  I accept all.
Let only Your will be done in me, as in all Your creatures,
And I’ll ask nothing else, my Lord.  Into your hands I commend my spirit;
I give it to You with all the love of my heart, for I love You,
Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into Your hands
with a trust beyond all measure, because You are my Father.

From prayer that asks that I should be sheltered from winds that beat on Thee.
from fearing when I should aspire, f
rom faltering when I should climb higher,
from silk and self, O captain, free thy soldier who would follow Thee.
From subtle love of softening things, from easy choices, weakenings…
not thus are spirits fortified, not this way went the Crucified…
From all that dims Thy Calvary O lamb of God, deliver me.

Give me a love that leads the way, the faith that nothing can dismay,
The hope no disappointments tire, the passion that will burn like fire.
Let me not sink to be a clod. make me Thy fuel, O Flame of God.-Amy Carmichael
